Is your favourite lunchbox killing you?

Updated: Jan 29, 2021

Warning: I am a teeny bit obsessed with our environment and how it could be keeping us sick.

One of the changes I made whilst overcoming Colitis was to remove as much plastic from my kitchen as possible.

Why????

Because of the BPA found in so many plastic items. A study in 2018 found that dietary exposure to BPA can increase mortality and increase symptoms in those of us with Crohn’s or Colitis.

How can this be?

  • BPA seeps out of containers and into our foods, then into our bodies when we eat.

  • BPA negatively impacts our gut microbiome.

Other risk factors associated with IBD is increased Oestrogen, once in the body, BPA can act like Oestrogen, this is not a good thing.

BPA has also been linked to possible health effects on the behaviour, brain and prostate glands of foetuses, infants and children, it’s just BAD NEWS however you look at it.

BPA is found in polycarbonate plastics often used in making containers to store food and beverages, such as water bottles. It is also found in epoxy resins used to coat the inside of metal products, such as food cans, bottle tops and water supply lines. In addition, some dental sealants and composites contain BPA.

So it’s not just those tubs you have kicking around in your kitchen cupboards....

How about BPA free products??

Well, I’m not so sure this is great either. Plastic is plastic and I would ask: what has the BPA been replaced with? And is it something else that we shall be avoiding in a few years?

Here are some quick wins to start to detoxify your home:

  • Choose glass or stainless steel containers

  • Look for non BPA canned foods (often organic products)

  • Don’t drink your takeaway coffee through the lid

  • Avoid plastic bottled water

And remember, as I always say "Start small" I appreciate that it can be costly to throw out everything you have and replace with glass or stainless steel so start by buying one or two new containers and recycling the old, make a point of doing this each month and before you know it your days of toxic plastic tubs will be history!
